Control Resonant launches digitally on September 24, 2026 (PS5 Deluxe owners get 48-hour early access starting September 22). Physical editions are delayed until October 15.
This beginner guide is based on all available hands-on previews, developer interviews, and official information as of early September 2026. It covers everything new players need to know for a strong start.
Do You Need the First Control?
No. The game is designed as a standalone entry focused on Dylan Faden. The story explains the necessary lore naturally. Playing the original enriches the experience but is not required.
Core Combat Philosophy
Control Resonant is a pure aggressive melee action game. There is no block and no parry.
The fundamental loop is:
- Attack with the Aberrant (shapeshifting melee weapon) → build Power
- Spend Power on paranatural Combat Abilities → build Falter (stagger) on enemies
- Execute a Faltered enemy → gain Dominance (temporary big damage buff)
- Use the Dominance window to deal heavy damage and continue the cycle
Healing mainly comes from blue orbs dropped by defeated enemies. Passive or defensive play is heavily punished.
The Aberrant Weapon System
You equip three forms at once:
- Primary Form — Main attack style
- Secondary Form — Supports or modifies the primary
- Combo Ender — Special finishing move after a combo string
Early archetypes include:
- Fast dual blades / Flurry (high crit, rapid attacks)
- Wide sweeping scythe / Slash (crowd control)
- Heavy single-target options (axe, hammer, etc.)
You can freely respec later in The Gap. Experiment early without fear.
Movement Tools
Master these quickly:
- Dash + Double Dash
- Double Jump + short hover/levitate
- Gravity Shift (walk on walls and change orientation — critical for exploration and some bosses)
- Perfect Dodge (slows time and boosts damage)
Dylan’s mobility is very strong — use it constantly in both combat and traversal.
Progression Systems
- Zones level up, not just Dylan. Activities in a zone give it XP. Zone levels unlock improvements (better health drops, revealed loot, challenge cabinets) and give Dylan talent points.
- Defeating a Resonant (major boss) lets you choose a new paranatural ability inside The Gap.
- After a Resonant dies, a Resonant Surge occurs: the world becomes harder (stronger/new enemies) but side content refreshes.
- You do not need to defeat every Resonant to finish the main story. Most can be tackled in any order after the first.
The Gap is your central hub for managing abilities, weapon forms, talents, and Artifacts. Visit it often.
Early Game Priorities (First 1–3 Hours)
- Finish the tutorial/opening sequence (escape from the Oldest House area). It teaches the basics thoroughly.
- After roughly 1–2 hours the world opens significantly — multiple large zones become available. Explore freely.
- Focus on learning the Power → Ability → Execute loop rather than rushing the story.
- In combat encounters, prioritize elite/marked enemies. Basic grunts often keep spawning until the tough ones are dead.
- Collect health upgrades (they come in sets of three for permanent increases).
- Do side activities in zones — they are the main source of talent points early on.
First Major Boss Notes – The Collective
This mold-themed Resonant is commonly shown in early previews:
- You cannot damage the main body at first.
- Focus on the tentacles attached to the walls/arena.
- Use Gravity Shift to walk on walls and reach them.
- Build Falter → Execute → use Dominance to push phases.
- Expect projectile spam and adds — stay mobile and aggressive.
Essential Beginner Tips
- Stay aggressive at all times.
- Learn Perfect Dodge timing early.
- Prioritize high-threat enemies first.
- Respec freely in The Gap if a build feels weak.
- Swap Artifacts as needed for specific situations (they can be changed anytime).
- Dialogue choices affect NPC perception and some side quest outcomes, but the main ending is fixed.
- Only one difficulty level exists, but assist options are available if you struggle.
Common Early Mistakes
- Playing defensively (the game is not designed for it).
- Ignoring the Power generation loop.
- Focusing only on small enemies while elites stay alive.
- Skipping zone side content (you miss talent points and QoL upgrades).
- Locking into one Aberrant form too early without testing others.
