How to Unlock spells in Heroes of Might and Magic Olden Era: Mage Guilds and Spellbook Uses Explained

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era players rely heavily on magic for battles, sieges, and exploration. Mastering Mage Guilds, the Magic Observatory, and your hero’s Spellbook is essential for accessing powerful spells across all tiers.

What Are Mage Guilds in Olden Era?

Mage Guilds are town buildings that unlock spells for your entire kingdom. They come in 5 tiers, with each upgrade unlocking access to stronger spells (Tier 1 to Tier 5).

Building a Mage Guild adds 4 random spells of the corresponding tier to your kingdom’s pool. Upgrading it further unlocks higher tiers.

How to Build and Upgrade Mage Guilds

  • Construct the Mage Guild Level 1 in any town you control (requires Gold, Wood, and other basic resources).
  • Upgrade it step-by-step to Level 2, 3, 4, and 5. Higher levels need rare resources like Gems, Crystals, and Mercury.
  • Each level built unlocks 4 new random spells of that tier in the Magic Observatory.
  • Multiple towns with Mage Guilds increase your chances of unlocking more spells or upgrading existing ones.

Pro Tip: Building Mage Guilds in several towns helps you get duplicates, which often upgrade spells instead of adding new ones.

Magic Observatory – Your Kingdom’s Spell Library

Press O (or click the Eye icon) to open the Magic Observatory. This screen shows all unlocked spells for your kingdom.

  • Grayed-out spells can be manually researched using valuable resources (e.g., Mercury, Crystals, Gems). Costs rise with tier.
  • You can upgrade individual spells (up to Level 4) once using Alchemical Dust.
  • Unlocks and upgrades apply kingdom-wide.

How Heroes Learn Spells (Spellbook)

Every hero starts with a basic Spellbook. To fill it:

  1. Build and upgrade Mage Guilds in your towns.
  2. Visit a town with a Mage Guild — the hero automatically learns all available spells they are eligible for.
  3. Magic school skills (e.g., Fire Magic, Water Magic) and Wisdom determine which spells your hero can learn and cast.
  • Tier 3+ spells usually require higher Wisdom and school expertise.

Might heroes can still learn spells but benefit less from magic schools compared to magic-oriented heroes.

Spell Tiers vs Spell Levels

  • Tiers (1–5): Determined by Mage Guild level. Higher tiers = more powerful spells.
  • Levels (1–4 per spell): Individual power upgrades for each spell. Higher levels improve effects (more damage, better buffs, etc.).

Additional Ways to Get Spells

  • Shrines and adventure map objects.
  • Scrolls found in creature banks or conservatories.
  • Certain hero skills or artifacts (including powerful Tomes that grant entire schools).
  • Neutral spells upgrade via a points system from buildings and Mage Guilds.

Best Practices for Magic in Olden Era

  • Prioritize building at least one Mage Guild early for Tier 1–2 spells.
  • Use the Observatory daily to manually unlock key spells you need.
  • Visit towns regularly with your main heroes to update their Spellbooks.
  • Combine multiple towns’ guilds for broader spell access and upgrades.
  • Balance magic investment with army strength — magic shines in support and control.

Mastering spells in Heroes of Might and Magic Olden Era through Mage Guilds and the Observatory gives you a massive strategic edge in campaigns and multiplayer. Whether you prefer Fireballs, powerful buffs, or resurrection, consistent town development is the key.
